Why Golf?

The question of "Why Golf?" is something I get asked a lot. Someone may walk into the room and brightly displayed on the TV is the middle of a round of a PGA event and they'll ask, "Why golf?". People have also asked that when they see me heading off to the course for a round, or buying new equipment, listening to a podcast, or even reading a book about it. If you like comedy listen to Robin Williams explain the evolution of golf and you will probably ask me, "why golf".  Golf is an individual game that challenges you as much mentally as physically. It is not mentally challenging like academia, rocket science, or long division but it instead challenges concentration, confidence, adversity, and planning. Often I refer to golf as my therapist because at no other time am I ever more in my own head then when I am standing over a six foot birdie putt. While I wage this war between my ears I am also trying to incorporate the task using a small stick to strike a small ball on the exact small spot to create the biggest effect on the ball. Any minimal change at anytime alters everything. Think of the butterfly effect happening over and over for 18 holes. Some will master these feats and fall in love with a game that only someone truly crazy would ever want to play. Those same people will shoot a great round and will cherish the sound of pure shot, the beating of your heart on a great putt, and the sound of golf ball falling into a cup. So to those who ask "why golf?" I say let's go play and I'll show you.
